March - August
The Lab Jumpstart program aims to ‘jumpstart’ the development of research skills and exposure to laboratory culture. During the after-school portion of the program, which spans March through June, students participate in small-group laboratory experiments in the RockEDU teaching laboratory to develop content knowledge and scientific skills in preparation for their summer mentored research experience. The after-school program culminates with an oral presentation demonstrating their research and scientific skills.
Students continue on to the summer research session from June through August, in conjunction with our Summer Science Research Program (SSRP), where they are paired with a research mentor to conduct original research in a Rockefeller research laboratory. This summer session culminates with the annual “Celebrating Science “ poster session where students share their scientific findings and conclusions with friends, families, teachers, peers, and scientists.
LAB Jumpstart takes place in two phases. During phase one, students participate in after-school sessions that take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 pm– 7 pm, March through June. Phase two is the full-time summer mentored research experience happening Monday–Friday from 9 am–5 pm), which runs from the end of June through mid-August (exact dates vary from year to year).
Benefits:
Students will receive a stipend during both the after-school and summer portions of their experience
Students receive MetroCards to cover their travel to and from the Rockefeller campus, and a majority of on campus meals are covered
Students who are interested in applying to LAB Jumpstart must first be nominated by a teacher or community leader. Once a nomination is received, LAB Jumpstart students will be sent a digital link to our application portal.
Nominations open in early fall, and final applications are typically due mid-December.
Required components of the LAB Jumpstart application include a personal essay, resume, unofficial school transcript, and a minimum of two letters of recommendation.
